Young Leaders Resolve Water Crisis in Hamirpur

In Para village of Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, Radha (18) and Monika (17) are quietly transforming their surroundings. Monika is currently studying in Class 10, while Radha had to discontinue her education after Class 8 due to financial constraints.
Like many girls in their community, they once had limited awareness of their rights and opportunities. However, their involvement in the Tarang project over the past two years has deepened their understanding of gender equity, mental wellbeing and government schemes.
Their leadership came to light when the only handpump in their neighbourhood broke down, leaving families without access to potable water. Initially, they turned to elders for help, but when no action was taken, they challenged the passive mindset of relying solely on government intervention.
On 28 September 2025, they submitted a written request to the gram pradhan Santosh Kumar clearly outlining the issue and its impact on daily life. Within a week, the handpump was repaired, restoring access to clean drinking water for the entire neighbourhood. This timely action not only resolved a pressing issue but also demonstrated the power of informed youth leadership.
Today, Radha and Monika are proud of their initiative. Their confidence has grown, and they continue to manage their daily routines with renewed energy and purpose.
